Integrated GPC/SEC System

Gel permeation chromatography is the technique of choice for rapid and reliable characterization of polymer molecular weight and molecular weight distribution. Advances in polymer science and technology mean that a more diverse range of solvents and temperatures are required in the modern GPC laboratory. With ever increasing workloads the GPC system must deliver greater accuracy, reproducibility and reliability with automated high sample throughput.

The PL-GPC 220 ensures excellent chromatographic performance across the full operational temperature range, from 30 to 220 °C, whatever the application. It is an extremely flexible system, designed to run almost all polymer, solvent and temperature combinations, with full automation.

Features of PL-GPC 220

Unrivalled Reproducibility Our integrated GPC system incorporate pumps from leading HPLC manufacturers giving first class performance whatever the application. Unbeatable flow reproducibility of 0.07% is achieved, not only in THF at near ambient temperature, but also in TCB at temperatures above 140 °C. Advanced temperature control and detector technology also ensure excellent repeatability for consistent and precise GPC results.

Enhanced RI Sensitivity and Stability The improved Refractive Index detector includes a new photodiode and uses fiber optic technology to maximize sensitivity while minimizing baseline drift and noise, all vital for good GPC. This RI ensures outstanding signal/noise ratios, even at 220 °C.

Easy Access Oven with Uniform Temperature Distribution For ease of use and flexibility, the column oven can comfortably hold six 30 cm GPC columns, RI detector and injection valve, as well as a viscometer and multi angle light scattering detector, if required.

The multi heater, forced air oven accurately controls the temperature within 0.05 °C variations per hour, minimizing detector baseline drift and ensuring the reproducible retention times so important in GPC.

PC Control - Simple to Program, Easy to Use The PL-GPC 220 features comprehensive PC control for full system management and monitoring, permitting truly unattended operation. Features include: 1. color-coded graphics 2. time estimator to calculate solvent use and assist with system automation 3. pump/flow rate ramping 4. automatic RI purging and baseline autozero.

Thermostated Solvent Delivery The PL-GPC 220 features a temperature controlled integral solvent module with a choice of solvent reservoir from 2 L bottles up to a 13 L stainless steel tank. This design ensures efficient, continuous and reproducible solvent delivery, even if the solvent is viscous or solid at near ambient temperature.

Improving the Capabilities of your GPC System

Dual Zone Heated Autosampler - No Degradation of Samples The PL-GPC 220 autosampler features dual zone heating to minimize thermal degradation. The Hot and Warm zones are independently programmable from ambient to 220 °C, and so the samples in the carousel waiting for injection are maintained at a lower holding temperature, then heated to analysis temperature immediately prior to injection. Injection precision has been measured at better than 1% RSD with no cross contamination between samples.

Interfacing to Other Techniques The PL-GPC 220 can easily be interfaced to other instruments to provide maximum characterization information. We offer a heated transfer line custom made to the length required for the application. The instruments incorporate a convenient oven access port and the heated transfer line is directly controlled by the operating system. Interfacing options include viscometry, low angle light scattering (LALLS), multiple angle light scattering (MALLS), evaporative light scattering detection (ELSD), Fourier transform infra-red (FTIR) and temperature rising elution fractionation (TREF).

Adding Integrated Viscosity and Light Scattering - Easily The PL-GPC 220 is designed for integrated triple detection. Viscosity and/or light scattering systems are available at the time of purchase, or can be added later. The systems are factory-prepared to accept both a four capillary differential viscometer (PL-BV 400HT) and light scattering detectors (model PD2040 from Precision Detectors or HT-miniDAWN from Wyatt Technology Corporation). Safety First The system incorporates integral sensors for constant monitoring. An audit trail feature offers a full status and error logging facility for system traceability.
